Why We’re Different:As other districts have cut or reduced physical education instruction, our district has expanded PE and committed to a “PE4All” philosophy.DUSD adopted the SPARK PE curriculum for all grades K-8, constructed gyms and fitness rooms for all middle schools, and created & staffed a district-level department to provide leadership and guidance in physical education instruction.DUSD is the only district in California to be a two-time state champion in the Governor’s Fitness Challenge. The reward? Two schools received $100,000 fully-loaded fitness rooms.DUSD PE is a recognized leader in the state.
Staff: Elementary PE is delivered by credentialed physical education specialists throughout DUSD. This is uncommon in California! They service grades 4 and 5 at all sites, while certain sites are also able to serve grades 2, 3, & 6.7th and 8th grade PE is taught daily at each of our 3 middle schools and one K-8 school, and is led by 8 teachers holding physical education single-subject credentials. Each of these educators holds a 4-year degree in Kinesiology. Each are also invaluable contributors to the growth and development of non-traditional, innovative programs that are relevant to students’ lives, helping them improve their health, and grow in the real-world skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
Our Focus: “Athletics are for athletes.PE is for everybody.”Our PE4All philosophy is focused on providing 21st century, individualized, innovative, relevant, standards-based instruction to all DUSD children. We are also committed to bringing physical activity into the classrooms, in support of neuroscience linking movement education with higher levels of student achievement. Our focus is to help all Delano kids lead their best lives.
